Protect Your Rights as a Dog Bite Victim

Nevada law guarantees certain rights to people who were attacked by a dog. These rights allow the victim to be compensated for their injuries and losses.

What to Do If You Are Attacked by a Dog

shutterstock_109331033If you are attacked by a dog, the first thing that you must do is notify emergency services once you have reached safety. A police report must be filed against the owner of the dog, and you will need to seek immediate medical care. Do not avoid being examined by the hospital, even if the bites seem minor. Dog bites can quickly become infected, leading to serious problems over time. Once you have been treated and released, you are encouraged to protect your rights as an injury victim and speak to a dog bite attorney in Las Vegas.

Difference Between Vicious and Dangerous Dogs

In Nevada, aggressive dogs are classified into two categories: dangerous and vicious. A dangerous dog is defined as a dog that has acted violently or menacingly twice within an 18 month period and that is easy to assume would cause bodily harm if it were off the owner’s property. Additionally, law enforcement can classify a dog as dangerous if the dog was used in a commission of a crime.

A vicious dog is one that kills or inflicts severe bodily harm on a human being or has already been classified as dangerous and continues to act in an aggressive or menacing manner. Nevada has made it a misdemeanor punishable by jail time for a dog owner who has been notified that their dog is vicious to transfer ownership or keep the dog for longer than seven days after notification.

Your Right to Seek Compensation

If you are attacked by a dangerous or vicious dog, you have the right to seek compensation for your injuries, losses, and suffering. You should speak to an attorney about the event as soon as your health is stabilized. Nevada law has a two-year limitation for filing a case for compensation for dog bite injuries, so you must act fast.
